Handicap Vans
It may come as no particular surprise to anyone who knows that handicap vans are an essential part of the mobility issue for people with disabilities. They are highly versatile, useful and adaptive transportation vehicles that enable many people to travel greater distances who would not otherwise be able to get around. This article looks at their uses and how they have become an integral part of the world of transport for people with disabilities.
What are Handicapped Vans?
In a nutshell, handicap vans are simply ordinary vans that have been adapted to suit the needs of the physically challenged and handicapped in order to transport them in safety and comfort from place to place. Here's an overview of how this is made possible.
The first need of this type of vehicle is the ability to allow wheelchair users to get in and out of the van. This is usually accomplished by using a van that already has a large sliding side-door or in some cases a rear door and the addition of a sliding handicap ramp that allows the wheelchair to be either wheeled directly in or raised and lowered on a level platform. This has the effect of saving the occupant the discomfort of having to be taken from the wheelchair and carried into the vehicle.
Once inside, the wheelchair can be secured to the floor so that it will not move while the van is in motion. There are also fixed or flip up seats that wheelchair users may be transferred into for the duration of their journey if they prefer this method assuming hey are physically capable of making the transfer. Other modifications and additions include specially adapted seatbelts, special seats for non wheelchair users, or those who are able to walk very short distances while otherwise needing the use of a wheel chair.
How Do Handicapped Vans Benefit Their Users?
Specially adapted handicap vans are a great benefit to their users in that they enable them to be transported safely and in comfort from home to any destination they desire by road. This includes taking people to vacation locations and to visit places of interest that would otherwise be denied to them.
They also enable their users to go shopping at out of town malls and to enjoy the freedom that able bodied people have in being able to get to these places. The vans are usually large enough to accommodate several passengers and their purchases from stores and malls.
Essentially, these marvelous vehicles provide an easy to use means of transportation for people with disabilities, wheelchair users and anyone with physical injuries to travel to places that otherwise would not be accessible for them. They allow people to make their journey with dignity and in comfort without the hassle that goes with trying to make do with a regular vehicle such as a family car or station wagon. For this reason, these accessible and useful handicap vans are a huge benefit to that sector of the community who deserve the additional benefits that go with this type of transportation.
